Our Cook-off History

The Georgia Great Steak Cook-Off®, established in 2007 by Chamber President, Lonnie Roberts, is a one-day steak cooking contest where teams demonstrate their grilling skills and have a chance to win cash prizes as well as “bragging rights”.  The blind judging contest is held in either in March or April and continues to grow as prize money and awards increase in value.  Since 2007 cooks from all over the Southeast and as far away as Texas and Arkansas have traveled to Hazlehurst to have a chance to represent Georgia in the World Championship Steak Cook-off held each year in Magnolia, Arkansas.  The competition has grown from 12 teams in 2007 who cooked approximately 200 dinner plates for the public to 64 teams who cooked approximately 500 dinner plates in 2016.  There have been several new items added to the 2017 competition to include an Appetizer Contest for steak teams. A Beef Challenge which is open to the public will give the “steak devourer” an opportunity to eat 48 ounces of steak, a baked potato, salad and roll within a 30 minute time period and win a cash prize!  There will also be a Parade of Teams held on Saturday morning through downtown Hazlehurst.  A total prize package of over $6000 is up for grabs in 2017.  The increase in prize money and the new activities are expected to draw a record number of teams to the competition.
